I have been directly involved in at least 7 national elections in the USA - the last five of which have been under a nationally computerized system. Your fear about possible election failure due to computerization (in the Philippines) is without any factual basis in theory or actual experience. You are, unwittingly, sowing "fear of the unknown". Divested of the "anti-GMA" - propagandas...you are campaigning simply for Noynoy Aquino, under the ruse that computerized elections may be easily rigged by the administration.
I have been on record, elsewhere, Enteng. With malice towards none...and in fairness and in balance...I have explicitly forecasted that the "media hype", by SUKA (Suck Up Kiss Ass) mainscreaming media will not last thru the elections. No matter how much Suka mainscreaming media tries to "package and re-package" Noynoy...and now, Mar, too...they will not succeed in getting him elected as the next POP (President of the Philippines). The mainstream media with "overwhelming" support from "vox populi (against Muck U. Farcos) succeeded in transforming an "ordinary housewife (as she was portrayed by her PR handlers), into the POP, against all odds. But the truth and fact is, Cory was no ordinary wife. She was the widow of a national patriot, who had a tremendous following. Without the "Ninoy" charisma and emotional sympathy for his dastardly assassination, Cory, had (absolutely) no chance of winning the presidency. In fact, despite the fact that Cory had a very huge electoral following and media and vox populi support (from and thru NAMFREL), the official election tabulations and official tally records showed that Muck U. Farcos won the "snap elections" - by almost 2 million votes. This victory was validated by COMELEC (though repudiated by NAMFREL). The Supreme Court affirmed MUF's election victory. And the Congress of the Philippines upheld these government agencies' findings. It was only in recent period when the "official results" were reclassified. Thus, if one were to review the election results of the "snap elections", the results will now read that Cory won by (exactly) the same margin that MUF won, as declared by Comelec, Supreme Court and the Congress of the Republic of the Philippines. I am not clear on how this was done, or what process was followed in this "arbitrary changing of the official election records."
If the original records were right, how did Cory become president? And the answer, as you and other Elagda mangdirigma know is....PEOPLE POWER. Therefore, Cory, rightfully was a "revolutionary president". Was it legal? Of course, it was.
And how was the only Pilipina - in fact the only one - who dared challenge the conjugal dictators rewarded by the same "do good, feel good, righteous Pinoys...who attached "morality in governance", and "morality of character" and "virtuosity" as the primordial character and personality requirements of an ideal president? Tell me, how many COUPS, can you count and remember, staged by the same military that turned against their former Commander-in-Chief...?
People in media are quick to cover up, ignore, deny and defy facts that hurt the image of their favored candidates. Was Cory the best president the Philippines ever had? History will prove she was not. One of the tests of a really good top executive is thru an objective evaluation of the "lasting effects" of their decisions. Let's consider a few of Cory's. Immediately after being president, she released all "political prisoners of Muck U. Farcos". Was that good or bad? Where are the openly known communists of this country? Last heard they were in Netherlands reviving, revitalizing and expanding their communist movements and activities that have been the thorn in our country's democracy. Here is another one: the termination of the Subic Base agreement. Let the economics of the situation before and after. The Subic Base Agreement came to an end during her term. Here is a third one: Despite the fact that she was a popular President and Commander in Chief...she failed to bring to a close the assassination of her very own husband...without whose murder, she would have been nothing more than a "simple housewife". And speaking of corruption (or absence of total morality in governance), what role did her older brother play during in government deals, schemes, shams and shenanigans, during her term of office? How about Hacienda Luisita workers and farmers grievances? You wanna talk about the energy crises that she mishandled?
During the 1992 elections...after "playing political horse trading", (letting all the wannabees and presidentiables jockey for her favored endorsement), she finally raised the hand and endorsed FVR to take her place...HOW POPULAR WAS HER CHOICE? How popular was FVR? He was so popular he won by the SLIMMEST and SMALLEST MARGIN ever inthe history of democratic elections in the Philippines, against Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, whose formal complaints still rests with the courts, unresolved.
Then Cory surfaced back into the political to "fight" FVR against the PIRMA's contrived campaign for "CHA-CHA" or CON-CON...to extend the presidential term of FVR. Her success in this effort was probably the best gift she gave FVR. For although no formal charges have been brought against FVR...everybody still remembers how he mocked treasonous acts of rebellions and coup d' etats, with: "Soldier, give me 30 (push ups)." Not to speak of the scandalous 2000 expos. And the unresolved "missing FMS sales funds" (Foreign Military Sales - from the USA). Not to speak of the schemes, scams, shams and shenanigans of "Kabuki". Not to speak of the open philandering of "Tabako", who was the author of the Metrocom - MISG and CS-5 Units - the fist of oppressions during the martial regime, that FVR supported - until it was no longer serving his poliltical ambitions. Yes, this is the same ex president who Cory endorsed and caused to be her successor as president, a cousin of Muck U. Farcos.
So, pray tell, Enteng...how close or far must the fruit fall from the tree...???? to make an objective decision that the "fruit is better than the tree (or an improvement, at the very least)"? Who is Noynoy Aquino? Do you know? How well have you vetted him as candidate for POP in elections 2010? What experience does Noynoy have in national government? What are his accomplishments? That he is "more moral" and therefore "less corrupt" than the rest of the pack aspiring to be the next POP? Let me ask you this. If Cory had not died...would you enjoin your elagda movement to support Noynoy?
Morality is a character trait. You have been advocating (forever) that "if a candidate is morally good, then he would be a morally upright leader...and what the Philippines needs to move forward, is precisely, that: a leader, a president who is soooo honest, and sooooo morally upright, and soooooo righteous...first, foremost, second and last...Forget, ignore, deny and defy the argument that he could be inexperienced, possibly be nothing more than a babbling idiot, a mama's boy, a media creation, or even, potentially, a DANGEROUS SELF RIGHTEOUS (tooooooo Catholic), against other faiths and religions...."
What have you seen in the character and personality, and background professional experiences, achievements, obstacles hurdled, positive legislative works sponsored and enacted...and interaction with his "peer politicos", that overwhelmed and consumed you to endorse him to be the next POP????
Whaaaaaat?
Pepeton
P.S. Hindi lahat ng problema ay nalulutas sa dasal at bait. It is time that those who have chosen the path of "influencing and persuading people towards a political advocacy", accept that fact. Using the "morality in governance" - PLOY is an easy sell approach to gaining support. That's proven. That's a given. By all accounts, popularly bruited about, (with generous helpings from media), Cory was a religious person. Question: "Was she a good present and leader?" Ask the same question of wannabees and presidentiables: "Is Erap a morally upright person?" (the overwhelmingly popular view is - "Of course not.") Was Erap a good president? Again, the answer is obvious...Definitely not. So, here we have two examples of extreme comparison. What is the conclusion? Simple. If one is honest. That morality has nothing to do...(or really, very little to do) with the making of a gooooood president.
I ask the final questions: "Does Noynoy have a good and honest, moral, upright character?" If he does, will it make him a good president? Now, otra cosa ese...if your reason for supporting and campaigning for Noynoy is to give the country a "better vice president...(Mar Roxas?), who will then be only a heartbeat away from the presidency...but that is again another story, altogether different, as it is - as controversial as KRIS AND KORINA for President and Vice President. Pero at least, si Kris at si Korina...mayroon pang "tunay na K".
You have the last word on this, Enteng.

What if...

What if there is a failure of election in 2010?
Sounds unlikely, or even paranoid?
Well... we all saw how inept our government agencies were in the rescue and
relief operations for victims of typhoon Ondong.
Now, consider the logistical nightmare in deploying the automated election
machines - over 80,000 units to be installed all over the country, some in
areas where power supply is unstable; the training of the same number of
teachers in the operation of the equipment; the number of technical support
personnel, knowledgable in hardware, software, and the process required to
provide pre- and election day support; and, the orientation/ handholding
needed to familiarize almost 40M voters who will be using the system for the
first time.
Even if we assume that the Comelec will faithfully perform its duty, the
sheer magnitude of the deployment and the lack of time to fully prepare and
test the system guarantees failure in several precints.
Here's the scary part. What if there are enough failures across the country
such that it will impact the results at the national level (meaning,
president, VP, and senators). On the local level, however, the failed
precints are not significant enough and winners for local seats, including
Congressmen, can be declared.
What happens if, as a result, Comelec cannot still declare a president,
after GMA's term expires?
The succession heirarchy under our current constitution is President,
Vice-President, Senate President, House Speaker. But by June 30, 2009 all of
these positions will be vacant. What then?
In such a situation, the constitution provides that Congress can convene and
appoint an acting president (I'm not sure if he has to come from the ranks
of Congressmen) . The acting president will then have to call for a special
election within 90 days to vote for the president (and I assume, other
unresolved national positions). But what is not clear is whether the
election must be held within the 90-day period, or it is merely the calling
of the election which is required within that period and the actual election
can be scheduled any time thereafter, maybe even a year later.
Now, do you still wonder why GMA has been frequenting her hometown in
Pampanga in preparation for a possible bid for a congressional seat?
This gives us a compelling reason to vote and campaign passionately for
Noynoy. Firstly, because if he maintains such a big lead (he currently has
about 50% compared to Villar's 15%, his nearest rival), then even if there
is failure of election in about 20% of precints, it will not affect the
final results and they will have to declare Noynoy as president. Secondly,
if GMA forces the issue through foul means, it is only Noynoy who can call
the people out to the streets, perhaps for a repeat of 1986 people power.
Let us not fall into complacency. Let us intensify our support for Noynoy at
this time. There's an easy way to volunteer and get your friends involved
via text. Register now at www.9noynoy. com and pass this on to your friends.
Let's give our children a chance for a better future.
God bless,
